For over 25 years, Jill Norris has been a pillar of support for Lyons students and families. As she retires, we honor her incredible journey and lasting impact.
While supporting her father through his medical treatments for Parkinson's disease, Jill became fascinated by the psychological aspects of his care. Initially pursuing a degree in neuroscience at SUNY Oswego, she soon realized that studying school psychology would allow her to combine her passion for working with children and her interest in the mind and how it works. After earning her degree, Jill married her high school sweetheart, Rich Norris, and moved to Virginia while he was stationed in the Navy. As a military spouse, Jill earned her Master’s Degree from the College of William and Mary. After Rich completed his service, they returned to Lyons, where Jill dedicated over 25 years to supporting Lyons Central School District students.
Her work focused on creating meaningful connections, offering one-on-one counseling and proactive classroom support. She collaborated closely with teachers and staff, always putting students first. Jill’s impact extends far beyond her years of service. “Every child is unique and has something special to offer,” she says. “Sometimes all they need is someone to be there.” She hopes to be remembered as someone who truly cared for students and their families.
More than just a workplace, Lyons has been Jill’s home. Jill is a Lyons alumnus, raised her children here, and built strong bonds with students, families, and colleagues. “Lyons has always been my home, my support. I am who I am, and my children are who they are today because of this community.” The relationships she formed extended far beyond the school walls, creating a network of trust and mutual care that has remained constant through the years. Whether celebrating joyful milestones or navigating life’s challenges, Jill always found strength in the unwavering support of the Lyons community, a place that embraced her like family.
In retirement, Jill plans to travel, spend time with her husband and sons, visit her nephews and daughters—one of whom is getting married in California this June—and spend more time with loved ones. She encourages those continuing in school psychology to cherish their work: “Enjoy every moment—it goes by too fast.”
Thank you, Jill, for your unwavering dedication over the past 25 years. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of the students and families you’ve touched.
