Don Winslow

After 33 years with the Lyons Central School District and 34 years in education, Mr. Don Winslow is retiring, leaving a lasting legacy of dedication and care.

Inspired by his mother, a math teacher, and his early experiences working with children at a YMCA summer camp, Mr. Winslow always knew teaching was his calling. A Fairport graduate, he attended SUNY Albany and Nazareth before beginning his career. He came to Lyons after interviewing just days before his wedding, not even knowing where Lyons was, but quickly finding a community that felt like home. The small-town atmosphere and strong relationships made Lyons a special place to spend his career.

Beyond the classroom, he expanded his impact through the Math and Chess Clubs, coaching volleyball, serving as an 8th-grade team leader and advisor, and building connections with students across the district. Equally committed to his colleagues, he prioritizes building strong professional connections and is especially proud to have founded “Treat Day,” a popular monthly tradition that brings staff together to boost morale and enjoy special treats in the staff room.

Mr. Winslow is proud to have been the first Master Teacher in Lyons CSD, later helping recruit three more educators to earn the distinction. Some of his best memories date back over 15 years, including partnering with the Rochester Orienteering Club to create an orienteering map of the campus for the after-school program, getting students outside to problem-solve and learn through hands-on exploration.

What he will miss most are the students and the collaborative teamwork with colleagues who always welcomed him into their classrooms. As he enters retirement, Mr. Winslow looks forward to spending time with his wife, Cheri, resting, spending time outdoors, hiking, geocaching, and competing in orienteering events around the country.

His advice to future educators is simple: build relationships first. That’s where meaningful learning begins.

Lyons CSD thanks Mr. Don Winslow for his many years of service and wishes him a happy, adventure-filled retirement!
