Lyons Middle/High School Music Teacher Michaela Shaffer was recently honored with the Reliant Credit Union Teacher Appreciation Award for Wayne County — a well-deserved recognition for a teacher whose passion, dedication, and heart have left a lasting impact on her students and school community.
A proud Lyons graduate, Ms. Shaffer now gives back to her alma mater by creating a vibrant and welcoming music program where students are encouraged to express themselves, grow in confidence, and find their place in the arts. Whether she’s staying late to paint sets, fine-tune a solo, or cheer from the sidelines at athletic events, her care for students extends far beyond the classroom.
“I felt shocked and was not expecting it at all,” said Ms. Shaffer. “I didn’t even know I had been nominated! I felt so appreciated and was so grateful to receive the Reliant Award. I love what I do and am so grateful for my students for pushing me to be the best teacher I can be.”
Students played a central role in her nomination. Several submitted entries to recognize her hard work and influence, including 9th grader Corbin Salerno, who shared, “I was so excited to nominate Ms. Shaffer, and I’m so glad she was selected to be recognized for all of the amazing things she does for us.”
Superintendent Dr. Matthew Barr shared, “Ms. Shaffer embodies the spirit of what it means to be an educator at Lyons. As a graduate of this district, she brings a deep understanding of the community and a genuine passion for helping students thrive. She leads with heart, uplifts her students through the arts, and is a constant presence in their lives. Her commitment to our kids is inspiring, and we’re incredibly proud to see her recognized for it.”
Congratulations, Ms. Shaffer. Your students, their families, and the entire Lyons community are inspired by all that you do!
