Thrive to survive

This May, members of the Lyons Central School District came together in meaningful ways to raise awareness and funds for cancer foundations that are making a difference in our region. Through fashion, fitness, and community spirit, LCSD staff and students demonstrated the power of compassion, courage, and collective action.

EYSTwo Lyons educators, Erica Gansz and Kelly Wetmore, along with elementary school student Madeleine Wunder, participated as models in the Tea for Two Fashion Show Fundraiser hosted by Embrace Your Sisters, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency financial assistance to individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. This impactful event was chaired by Lyons alumna Krista Jackson, who serves as a member of the Board for Embrace Your Sisters, continuing the legacy of Lyons Lions making a difference.

“For me, modeling in the EYS Fashion Show was a way to honor my mother and cousin's triumphant breast cancer journeys, celebrate my own health journey, support those currently fighting, and remember those who have passed. The day of the fashion show was empowering. We were surrounded by a sisterhood of strength, resilience, and hope,” shared Ms. Gansz. She added that she has supported EYS for over 10 years, noting the organization's volunteer-run model and commitment to keeping 100% of funds local.

Mrs. Wetmore echoed that sentiment, sharing,

“Embrace Your Sisters' mission is to provide support and hope to people in our communities struggling with breast cancer through financial assistance, education, and informational resources,” shared Ms. Wetmore. “I felt honored to be involved in such an important event and to be in the presence of such courageous and resilient women.”

Additionally, Elementary Instructional Coach Chelsea Powell led a team of over 35 members from the Lyons community, including both staff and local residents, who participated in the Thrive to Survive Middle Finger 5K in Geneva, NY. The early morning race is an annual symbol of hope, beginning at sunrise to honor those impacted by cancer—survivors, fighters, and families alike.

“Thrive To Survive’s mission resonates with me personally—supporting individuals fighting cancer is a cause that calls us all to show up with heart, strength, and community,” said Mrs. Powell. “Wearing Lyons gear and running for those who have been impacted by cancer was a moment of purpose and pride. This wasn’t just about miles—it was about making a meaningful difference, and I’m grateful to have stood alongside so many who believe in that same mission.”

Both events were powerful reminders of the ways in which our Lyons community continues to stand together in support of important causes. Whether walking a runway or running a 5K, our Lions lead with heart.
