After four years with Lyons Central School District—and a lifelong career dedicated to helping children and families—Behavioral Interventionist Mike Blask, known by students simply as “Mr. Mike,” is retiring.
With a degree in psychology and human development, Mike spent over 20 years in the Olean area working in Child Protective Services and for a school-based non-profit agency while coaching youth sports before moving closer to family and joining LCSD. His role at Lyons was created during a time of increasing need for student social-emotional support, and it was a perfect fit.
“I’ve always believed that relationships are the foundation of growth,” Mike shared. “If students know you care, they’ll let you in, and that’s where the real work happens.”
From the moment he stepped into the halls of Lyons, Mr. Mike focused on building trust, meeting students where they were, and helping them navigate their challenges with empathy, humor, and heart. Whether he was checking in with a student having a tough morning or hearing “Hey, that’s Mr. Mike!” from across a grocery store aisle, he made lasting impressions through connection.
“My favorite part is when students are excited to see me outside of school,” he said. “That tells me I made a difference even if I don’t realize it.”
His presence in the building—always student-centered and uplifting—will be deeply missed. He brought positivity and consistency, knowing that even small acts of support could change the course of a student’s day.
In retirement, Mike looks forward to traveling, visiting his five children and seven grandchildren, and spending quality time with his wife, Margaret. She will also retire from LCSD just five days after him, which he refers to as the “5-day plan.” Mike is excited to enjoy life in Lyons, a community that he and his family truly love.
His advice to those continuing the work: “Have empathy. Show up every day. What may seem small to you could mean everything to a student. Be part of the solution.”
Thank you, Mr. Mike, for leading with kindness, lifting up our students, and showing us the power of genuine connection. You’ll be missed more than you know.
