This summer, the Lyons Central School District launched a groundbreaking Summer Meal Program, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to receive three meals a day, seven days a week.

jenn tylerLed by Food Services Manager Jenn Tyler, the idea originated from a conversation between her, Superintendent Dr. Matthew Barr, and Assistant Superintendent for Business Mike Pangallo. “Some kids don’t have access to our open meal sites,” she said. “We knew we had to find a way to reach them.”

With support from a state nutrition representative and funding from the No Kid Hungry grant, the district made it happen. Students enrolled in summschool fooder programs receive meals on-site, while others have breakfast, lunch, and dinner delivered directly to their homes. It’s more than they typically receive during the school year—and a lifeline for many families.

“There was no hesitation,” Jenn said. “I’ll never say no when it comes to our kids.”

While serving nearly 21,000 meals per week over the summer, the logistics are no small feat—mapping delivery routes, confirming addresses, and organizing opt-out systems—but Jenn’s team rose to the challenge. “We have an all-hands-on-deck mentality. Everyone pitches in, and we’ve built a team that can do everything.  They’re the backbone of this program—dedicated, hardworking, and always willing to go the extra mile. Whether they’re preparing meals, loading bags, checking lists, or driving for deliveries, they do it with heart. I’m proud to stand beside them every day.”food staff

Community response has been overwhelmingly positive. One parent shared, “Shouting a big THANK YOU to the entire crew!!! We are so incredibly grateful for the meal deliveries!” Another shared how the program is helping after an unexpected cut in her spouse’s work hours.drop off

Now in her 20th year at LCSD, Jenn says this is one of the most meaningful efforts she’s led. “As a mother and grandmother of LCSD students, both past and present, I am dedicated to this work. I want to continue doing this every summer.”

Her advice to other districts? “Nothing is impossible. You need a good team and a shared goal. If you can make it happen, jump in.”
