Students in our Afterschool Program are shining bright as they share what they’re most grateful for in celebration of Lights On Afterschool Day. We are grateful for programs like the L.Y.O.N.S. Afterschool Program that support our students each day, and for the dedicated staff who make it all happen. #LightsOnAfterschool

The Lyons Varsity Volleyball Team proudly presented a check to Lyons alumna and Embrace Your Sisters board member, Krista Jackson, after raising over $300 during their Pink Out Volleyball game. Senior and team captain Kamryn Bonnell led the effort, helping support a nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals battling breast cancer. A powerful show of teamwork, community spirit, and Lyons pride.

Ms. George’s 7th-grade scientists are putting their chemistry skills to work. Students sorted and organized key characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases into a concept map, making connections between particle arrangement, movement, shape, volume, and density. A hands-on way to see how the states of matter compare and connect!

Ms. Williamson’s 2nd-grade readers are strengthening their text-to-text connections with a delicious twist. After reading Bone Soup by Cambria Evans and Bone Soup: A Spooky Tasty Tale by Alyssa Satin Capucilli, students compared the stories and discussed sequencing. They then created their own version called “Friend Soup,” listing the ingredients and steps needed to make their special recipe. A fun way to blend literacy skills with creativity and teamwork!

Honors Global II students in Ms. Gansz’s class are diving deep into history as they explore the rise of nationalism in the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires. Through reading and discussion, they are uncovering the long-term global tensions that eventually reshaped nations and sparked World War I. A powerful look at how past events continue to shape the world we know today.

Our College and Career Counselor, Mrs. Kuhn, has been keeping students busy with incredible opportunities to explore their futures. Juniors and seniors attended Rochester Careers in Construction, where they tried hands-on activities like operating heavy equipment, VR welding, and bricklaying while learning about skilled trade pathways. Students in grades 10–12 also visited Tompkins Cortland Community College to tour the campus, attend a college fair with more than 50 representatives, and experience dining hall life. Most recently, the Lyons Future Educators Club visited St. John Fisher University for a mock class, a panel discussion with education majors, and a campus tour focused on resources that support future teachers. Empowering students to see what’s possible beyond graduation!
