Capital Improvement Project: Progress Update

We are excited to share that significant progress has been made to bring our shared vision to life. In the Fall of 2024, both playgrounds at the Elementary School were completed, which included a large playground thoughtfully redesigned with ideas from students in the Lyons Elementary Student Council. These improvements have given students and community members new equipment and fresh spaces for play and exploration.

In 2025, at the shared Town and School District Transportation Facility, teams replaced the overhead doors, modernized meeting spaces, and installed advanced underground roof drainage, ensuring safer winters for all.

In addition, all Elementary School roofs have been replaced. Important upgrades to the Manhattan Street water system were also completed, improving service for the current building and supporting future construction in that area.

Ingenuity is driving every decision. By transforming the former transportation facility into office space for construction crews, we are not only saving significant funds but also setting a bold example of resourcefulness and fiscal responsibility, thereby eliminating the need for additional temporary structures, such as trailers or modular buildings.

Temporary entrances have also been created at both gymnasiums within the Community Center, allowing residents to continue using recreational spaces while the facility undergoes construction. These accommodations will allow for community access as the project moves forward with essential improvements.

Currently:

The Board of Education approved and awarded a series of construction bids at the October 28th board meeting, clearing the way for the next phase of work to begin. Contractors are holding kickoff meetings, placing material orders, and mobilizing their teams to prepare for major on-site construction. This is an especially exciting moment for our district, as it marks the start of the largest and most transformative phase of the project.

What’s Ahead:

Now that we’ve completed the planning, design, approvals, and contractor mobilization, we’re ready to begin the most significant phase of the capital project. This marks an exciting milestone as visible work on the project will soon be underway, bringing us one step closer to delivering the improvements our community has been anticipating. This winter, contractors anticipate starting the ground work for the addition at the Middle/High School and upgrades at the elementary school. Sustainability and future-ready infrastructure are at the heart of this stage of the project. Geothermal drilling and site work will take place to pave the way for a new era of clean, efficient energy at our schools.

We remain grateful for the community’s ongoing support. As we move into the next phase of construction, there will be various temporary changes and adjustments, such as parking,  entrances, and event relocation to alternate spaces in order to accommodate ongoing work. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and commitment as we continue this important work together.

Every milestone proves our relentless commitment to building safe, innovative, and inspiring spaces for our students. Your partnership is the driving force behind this progress, and together, we are forging a transformative future for our entire community.
