For Alayna Shipley, Lyons Central School District has always been home. A 1989 Lyons graduate, Shipley returned to her alma mater in 1993 when she was hired as a part-time speech therapist. After earning her master's degree in Reading from SUNY Oswego, she transitioned into a reading teacher role in 2001, beginning a career that would span 33 years and touch countless lives.
"I knew I wanted to be a teacher because of the teachers who inspired me here in Lyons," Shipley said. "When the opportunity came to return, it felt like it was meant to be."
Throughout her career, Shipley worked with students of all ages, from kindergarten through high school. She loved finding new ways to engage learners and helping students discover their confidence. When asked what she's most proud of, her answer is simple. "I want to make a difference. You never know when a small interaction might change someone's day," she said. "Being able to help students through difficult moments is something I'll always cherish."
While she is sad to say goodbye, Shipley is looking forward to new adventures. She hopes to continue helping others through part-time work and volunteering, including at the Rose Free Library and the Humane Society. She also looks forward to spending more time with family, camping, hiking, and exploring the country's national parks.
As she prepares for retirement, Shipley says she'll miss the connections she made every day with students and colleagues. For future educators, her advice is to lean on those around them. "Don't try to do it alone," she said. "Collaborate, keep learning, and never stop growing."
After 33 years of service, Lyons Central School District thanks Alayna Shipley for her unwavering dedication, compassionate spirit, and lasting impact on generations of Lyons students. Her legacy will continue to be felt in the countless lives she helped along the way.
